  • Headteacher update 30th November

    Mon 30 Nov 2020

    Hello all,

I hope you had a peaceful last weekend of 'lockdown' and are ready for another week. Christmas is approaching and the children are getting excited, news on what we might be able to do later this week!

    1.  Home learning ideas - if you follow us on Twitter (@MadleyPrimarySc) you will see lots of ideas from forest school and also the classroom that can be done at home as well. A map is attached from an idea we use at forest school to use what we find (trees, plants, objects etc) to stimulate ideas to tell stories, you could do a similar thing at home by using screen shots of a map (we use the OS map app) then overlaying photos along the way (the children took some of these). So far classes have found trees with eyes, a guardian of the forest, a mirror lake, a turtle tree guard and an elephant foot tree ! our quest continues ........ great for Geography skills as well.

Our 'site' is actually where the parachute picture is but we are very lucky to be given access to the whole woods if we want to explore further for stories etc. We used the parachute this week to explore how a hot air balloon works as the heat from our fire raised the temperature slightly inside and the parachute rose up.

Our forest school site is private land for our exclusive use and is kindly 'lent' to us by The Duchy Of Cornwall, we are very fortunate to have it and we have built up a very positive relationship with the Duchy over the past 10 years. Please do not explore our site, hopefully we will hold some family sessions when 'normality' returns.

    2. Useful books and stories for helping your children

Oliver Jeffers - 'The Heart and The Bottle' - both a picture book for any age and also an interactive app.

                           - 'What We'll Build' - a picture book about building for the future - a great start to conversations.

Barefoot Book Company - have a range of amazing resources and books for all ages but especially younger children.

Story boxes/bags - use and old shoe box or a bag to collect objects then draw them from the bag to re-tell a story. Originally stories were always told (Aborigines use story sticks to collect objects, attach them to a stick then use the objects as a reminder to re-tell the story of their journey).

You may develop a 'Covid box' (or re-may it something more positive)with objects, newspaper clippings etc of this time and use it as a positive reflection on 'a moment in history' and reflect on any positive aspects e.g more time together, walks, re-connection with the outdoors etc. Whatever we might think we have been a 'moment' in history !

    3. Overall attendance last week was 98%. All classes had over 96%.

    4. Parking - we are now down to just 3 people who seem not to notice anyone else or the safety of others (either blocking the pull in in front of the pub or just parking where they want). This week we will send specific e-mails to those people then inform the Police. Thank you to all those who coped well with the removal lorries and are considerate to others, much appreciated.

Our gates open at just after 8:45am in the morning and at 3:25pm in the afternoon.

Could we please ask that people do not queue across the main entrance as it blocks other coming out. We try to be as quick as possible opening the gates but we don't want to keep getting earlier and earlier as staff have things to prepare in the morning and the children get ready for a certain time at the end of the day.

    5. Information regarding exit from lockdown (copied from the BBC News website)

    Have a good week.

    Regards

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 26th November

    Thu 26 Nov 2020

    Good morning,

I hope you are all well. Teachers are continuing to make phone calls home and this will take a few weeks to get through everybody.

Apologies in advance for any 'typos' or missing words in the following as I am doing it on a tablet as my school laptop had a fight with the floor and lost ! (Now having a screen repair).

    1. Support - thank you for the positive comments around the Hereford Times letter and for the people who responded, it is much appreciated. 'Todays news, tomorrows 'virtual' chip paper' but it does have an impact on community perceptions, potential new parents and people not associated with the school who are driving past (no - one has asked for an autograph yet though !). Also I feel it was a little unfair on the great majority of parents/carers who always show good awareness, care and 'flow and go.'  We have not asked you to wear a mask and leave it to your own 'common sense' if you feel you need to, your time in and around school is very limited (less than 10 minutes and you are asked to keep moving as well as keep 2m apart, this lowers the risk of infection).

Madley is not immune to cases and we are doing all we can to minimise the risks, we can only hope that all parents/carers are too.

    2. 'Flow and go' - the observations from the person driving by were a very limited picture but it does make you think ! Whilst the vast majority of our parents/carers do 'flow and go' we do have a few who block pavements, have chats and gather in groups out of sight of school. Please don't as it reflects poorly on the rest of us !

Observing parents/carers dropping and picking up is like watching the human Red Arrows as you negotiate space, cross pathways and stop/start to let people go ! Thank you for your awareness, care and understanding.

There are no 'rules' for face masks when picking up/dropping off as you should be 2m apart on school grounds (you have very limited access to the grounds anyway) and white dots mark the places to wait. We just ask you to exemplify the care, awareness and understanding that we ask of everyone, you have a responsibility to us, other parents/carers and the wider community.

    3. Forest school feedback - every class has been to forest school for different lengths of time. Year R have been learning how to work as a team and exploring the site for the first time, Year 1 have been using their senses to explore, Year 2 and Year 3 have been enjoying a story walk around the bigger woods, Year 4 have been working on the music garden by making instruments, Year 5 have been building wilderness shelters and Year 6 enjoyed a writing session at dusk in the woods. Our children do not even realise that they are practising mindfulness and enhancing their mental health at forest school (that is because we see it as an embedded part of our culture not an 'add on' or 'flavour of the day.' )

Not many schools nationally have as many trained Level 3 Forest School leaders as we do (we have 12 !), this is a qualification that takes a great deal of time and effort from staff to complete and has a formal assessment process.

    4. Story telling ideas - attached are some photos from Year 2s forest school experience this week. We observed a variety of trees as we went outside of the boundary and walked different paths at forest school. They found a cauldron, turtle tree, elephant foot tree and a cauldron ! They then constructed a story from their observations, an idea for walks at home as well.

    5. Jewellery - the only jewellery allowed in school are plain, small stud earrings. You must provide micro tape to cover the earrings if your child cannot remove them for PE. Children are not allowed make up or nail varnish.

    6. Self isolation learning - if you are self isolating then school will provide work on a daily basis. Teachers are obviously still teaching a class so it may take a day to get 'up and running' depending on when you let us know. Work will be e-mailed via Parent mail or posted on your work area of Seesaw, you can then post it back for comments etc.

    7. Christmas and the Spring term

The announcements of being able to meet up to 3 families for 5 days will be good news for many, especially those who have had limited contact with others. It is a concern for school as it could result in cases or isolation if families do not abide by the 'rules' and guidance. It is not our place to tell you who to meet or what to do but we do need to raise awareness of your social responsibility and our concerns. We want everyone to enjoy Christmas safely.

Return to school is Wednesday January 6th which will give our school a 'firebreak' of a week from the 27th December.

Please be really mindful of what you do as we have staff who live with vulnerable adults and we are very mindful of what we do in order to keep your children safe.

    8. Mental health awareness - everybody has anxiety of some sort (it is a normal human condition) and it is heightened in the current climate. Staff coming to school, children and adults being around other people, anxiety around family members they haven't seen etc - all of these can result in behaviour changes, mood swings and a raft of other issues (sleep patterns, eating, worries etc). Our aim is to keep school as calm, ordered and consistent as possible for everyone (children and adults) but children may have issues with their friendships, concentration and behaviour. Below are some ideas that may help:

Stories are good - reading, story telling and sharing books is good for children of any age. Books also give a good way into conversations and feelings. I will include some good resources for people to use. Books like Happy by Nicola Edwards is good for making children think positively.

Music - music is a good outlet. We have 3 classes learning instruments together through Encore while Mrs Blaker is teacher Year 2 the Ukele. Every class has music each week and we use music a lot for relaxation and mindfulness.

Walks and 'getting out' - we use forest school for a wide range of learning and give children ideas for things they could do at home as well. Awareness walks 'noticing' what is around you engages the children and allows beneficial time outside.

Idea - alphabet walk = in order spot or find things that begin with the letters of the alphabet in order.

Art and drawing - the attached photograph is a view of forest school using only found resources at forest school to create texture, perspective and form. Something you could do on a walk at home.

I have also attached a piece of photography from a child, taken by an 8 year old, documenting what they noticed. Again something they could do at home.

Exercise - PE in school is still really important and regular exercise keeps the brain and body engaged. We have maintained our 2 hours of PE and exercise as well as break/lunchtimes.

    9. Lunches and manners - I know it has been on the news but we always insist on a high standard of manners regardless of where we are and the children display these whether in school or at forest school. We have special cutlery for Reception to assist with cutting food and independence when eating and our children eat from a plate (we don't use the trays with everything on one tray).

    10. Ventilation - it is vital that we maintain good ventilation in every class at all times, whatever the weather ! Children and adults may need an extra layer underneath and we allow children to put their coats on and off sensibly.

Have a good last 'lockdown' weekend. News about Christmas parties, Christmas dinner  etc for the children next week (there won't be any church celebration, whole school talent show, Christmas Fayre or some of our whole school events). We do have lots planned and we will 'make the best of it.'

    Regards

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 23rd November

    Mon 23 Nov 2020

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. Not sure if you know but you have made the paper !

The Hereford Times published a letter from someone who had driven past our school and decided to write about the lack of face masks worn by parents ! They failed to notice everything we have in place, different entrances and the 'flow and go.' At least they didn't comment on the parking ! As a school we will not respond but you may want to as a parent/carer.

Please can we make sure we ALL park safely, sensibly and with consideration this week, at the end of the week we were down to 2 people who lacked awareness (one parent from school and one from pre school). Our collective aim should be 'no more community complaints !'

Please could we remind people that only one parent/carer should drop off or collect from school to minimise the number of people around school.

    1. Attendance last week = 98.1% overall. Every class was above 95 %. Long may it continue but we are also prepared for any changes, isolation or positive test results. Keep aware and please do not come to school if you have any symptoms then book a test and keep us informed of your results.

    2. NSPCC - every class took part in walks around the 'loop' at forest school and showed great resilience, determination and teamwork in achieving the numbers below. There was a definitive element of competition between classes (even though  they all did it separately on different days at different times) and some want to do it again ! The loop involves a steep hill. We were replicating a NSPCC climb of the Shard steps in London. A brilliant effort from everyone and a pleasure to watch the teamwork, encouragement and endeavour. If you still wosh to donate then please send it in with your child.

    Class R = 2 loops

    Class 1 = 3 loops

    Class 2 = 4 loops

    Class 3 = 5 loops

    Class 4 = 8 loops (some did 10,11 and one child did 13 !)

Class 5 = 10 (they did it after Year 6 and wanted to beat them !)

Class 6 = 8 loops (they want to do it again and beat Year 5 !) - 8 loops is the equivalent of walking directly from school to forest school and back !

    3. Community Garden next steps - more offers of help arrived last week and some good funding opportunities. We are now thinking of an outdoor, covered kitchen area for community cooking sessions. In the new year we will give a separate, detailed plan with a work schedule. We have some amazing offers of help, materials, advice and building skills.

    4. Pets in school - again some amazing offers of cages, care and animals. We are looking to get small pets (as we used to) as they are good for children to care for and offer therapeutic times for children.

More information later in the week. Teachers continue with their phone calls home, it will take a few weeks !

    Regards

    Mr Batstone
  • Headteacher update 19th November

    Thu 19 Nov 2020

    Hello everyone,

Thank you to everyone for their 'common sense' and understanding as we move from week to week (actually we go 'day to day' at the moment). Lots of information and requests below so please read through it all carefully.

Teachers have started their phone calls home to discuss the '3 stars and a wish' but this will take several weeks. We need to be quite strict with the 10 minute time limit or it may take months (we love talking to you but there are a lot of children to get through).

    1. Attendance last week was R = 99.6%/Yr 1 = 97.9%/Yr 2 = 100%/Yr 3 = 95%/Yr 4 = 88 %/Yr 5 = 99.7% and Yr 6 = 96.1%

Children who are isolating do not count as part of the figures. I am sharing these are they are something to celebrate, well done everyone. We will take each day and week as it comes !

    2. Online awareness

Do you know what your child is on ? Do you know the age limits of sites such as Tick Tock and other social media ?

Do you regularly check their devices ? Are their devices in their bedrooms unsupervised ?

Do they have age appropriate accounts ?

Do they have a phone and do you know what they do on it ?

Are your children on a screen too often or before bed ? (Extensive research has shown that watching tv or being on a screen before bed stimulates the brain and prevents good or sound sleep). Do you limit screen time ?

Regular safeguarding information is posted on our regular newsletter and we have posted a presentation from CEOP (National Crime Agency) on the Parent's page of the website (or Madley TV). Children are now on-line more than ever and need to be aware of the dangers as well as the benefits of an on-line life. Netflix have an excellent film called 'The Social Dilemma' which shows how social media can control what we think and do.

    3. Stackpole news

Stackpole is a National Trust Centre that we have used for the past 12 years with groups of Years 5 and 6. Many, many children from Madley have enjoyed amazing times at Stackpole and we have held staff leaving weekends there as well. Unfortunately the National Trust have decided to stop using the centre for school residentials and we won't be able to visit again. We are hoping that they reverse their decision in years to come and open the centre again. Really sad news for our school.

We will hopefully be able to have a residential later in the year and I am working with Longtown Outdoor Centre on some alternative provision at a coastal location. More news to follow and 'everything is an opportunity'

    4. Seesaw

You will have received the Seesaw codes along with your child's report. These codes are individual for home use only, no-one else will know the code unless you share it (so please don't as that is about children learning about password management etc, a skill for life). There are some practise activities for some year groups to get used to using it but the main purpose is for use in the event of having to isolate or if a class 'bubble' are all at home isolating.  Any comments can be seen by the teacher and that child but is not open to everyone to view, it allows the teacher to feedback to an individual child. Please do not post photographs of children only work.

Seesaw use in school is different and the children will have a different way to access it as a class without using their home access code. The teachers will show them that and may use it in school.

The main purpose of Seesaw for us a school, at this current time, is in case of isolation a platform to post work and for you to post it back for feedback.

    5. Parking around school and in the village

I have attached a map of Madley (Google have some things in the wrong place) for you to think about where and how you park. Please take the time to look for suitable places to park that :

    1. Are safe.

    2. Do not block driveways or residents (we had an incident again this week where a local resident had their driveway blocked and I have asked any resident who experiences this to record the registration and contact the Police directly).

    3. May be a short walk from school but exemplifies the values of the school. The tennis club/park car park has a path across the field and doesn't involve crossing any roads.

Your parking is your responsibility and, as a school we can only remind and request that you exemplify our values, but ultimately you either have a positive or a negative impact on our school (and your children show the correct values in school).

If you always park with consideration, thought and in a safe manner ' thank you.'

    6. 'Mental wealth'

Animals -  we used to have rabbits, hamsters and chickens in school and are looking to get some more 'pets' for each class. We have some amazing fish tanks that have been donated to school so some classes may have take ownership of those. We won't have chickens (as they potentially attract rats) but we will be looking to get a hamster or rabbit (or more than one) for classes as the benefit and responsibility of caring for them is really beneficial.

We will check any allergies before we purchase any creatures and we also need to ensure that children/parents will be willing to look after them in the holidays.

If anyone has any unused, sterilised cages or wheels to donate then it will save the budget a bit !

    7. 'Community Legacy garden' project

I have attached a very 'rough' drawing of the outline ideas for the Community Garden project. We have had an excellent response to requests for help and donations and are in the process of constructing a shopping list for materials (one company benefactor has asked for this) which will then allow us to source materials for our volunteers to construct. We have had offers for pathways and access. Madley Charities are paying for mains water to be put in. Sheep are already in place (Year 5 have tested their interaction and wanted to bring them back to school, they were a big hit but aren't house trained !! ).

We need some help sourcing polytunnels - the disused Nursery on Brampton Road has some frames so we are exploring a 're-use' approach but don't know who owns it. Can anyone help ?

We will need a lot of good quality soil.

We have been given a link to explore funding through a Council link as well.

We are in contact with a range of providers of containers and conversions for the kitchen and storage units.

Lots is happening in the background and 'under the surface' and is coming together nicely.

    8. NSPCC walk at forest school

Most classes have completed their charitable walk for the NSPCC (any donation is appreciated) at forest school. The looped walk of our site takes in a big hill as part of the challenge as the NSPCC have a charity event for a very small group to walk up the stairs of a tall building in London. Our 'version' is no-where near as long but gives a 'flavour' of the idea. So far classes have achieved:

Class R = 2 loops 'sharing the rope' in small groups ('sharing the rope' is a mountaineering term where you trust others completely to look after you and vice versa).

    Class 1 = Thursday afternoon

    Class 2 = 4 loops

Class 3 = 5 loops (the equivalent to 2,736 steps or 18 floors of tall building ! ).

    Class 4 = Friday

Class 5 = 10 loops ! (the equivalent of approximately 4 miles or from school to forest school and back via a direct walking route ! They also wanted to go further than Year 6 but Year 6 want to go back and go further than Year 5 !! Healthy competition !).

    Class 6 = 8 loops

Some photographs have been posted on our Twitter account @MadleyPrimarySc

All the classes did the challenge in small teams and showed great resilience, communication, teamwork and determination. They enjoyed the 'buzz' of completing a difficult task together and kept going when they wanted to give up. We will et you know our donation to the NSPCC when we have all completed the task.

Lots is happening at school everyday, as well as all the current restrictions (or opportunities) we also have plans in the pipeline for many new opportunities.

    Kind regards

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 16th November

    Mon 16 Nov 2020

    Hello all,

Hope you had a calm and peaceful weekend. We have some great news at the end of last week as we achieved our 6th Eco Schools Green Flag award (one of only 150 in the country for all schools) and demonstrating a 12 year commitment. Now for the 7th in two years time !

School is a safe place to be but we need to be aware that cases in Herefordshire are rising, many schools are now experiencing cases. It takes a great deal of effort, awareness and teamwork to keep our school operating, it is not normal and has a great impact on all of the staff involved but it is our job and we are fully commited to make the best of every situation.

Apologies for any typos or glitches in this communication but my laptop is having it's screen repaired and I am completing this on a very temperamental tablet !!!

    1. Procedures around school - keep up the good work and awareness. I know I keep saying it but we will have a case one day and we need to be prepared. In school we are trying to keep things as normal as possible but we are in our class bubbles, staff don't see each other much and they have next to no break during the day (they are working really hard and trying to make learning as much fun as possible whilst having lots happening in their own lives). I want to say a massive 'thank you' to them for their hard work and dedication.

A special mention to our cleaners who work late in the evening and Sunday mornings to keep us all safe.

From this week there won't be any meetings involving parents/carers on school grounds, we will only communicate via telephone or online (if appropriate). No parents/carers are allowed on school grounds (except for our normal drop off and collection procedures) until further notice.

'Everything is an opportunity' and there are new opportunities -

    - We have virtual assemblies with our new webcams so we can see each other better (opportunities for classes to work together virtually as well).

    - We have more outdoor learning and forest school opportunities.

    - We have new opportunities at break/lunchtime with new equipment and things to play with.

    - We are using every space in school.

    - We use the field all of the time ! We all have wellies in school.

In the event of a case :

    - we would take advice and guidance from Public Health England and the Local Authority.

    - in our school it is likely to be a whole class that goes home and all of the associated adults as we do not have defined seats all day and the children move around.

    - we operate a breakfast club and after school childcare provision (many schools don't but we see it as vital to parents who work) and this may have an impact as well. Many schools have also cut back the school day and finish earlier but we have no plans to do that.

Factors that influence positively  - our school is well ventilated. We keep windows open when children travel on a mini bus. We keep Year groups seperate and they do not mix. We are very aware of social distancing. We clean regularly and children wash their hands before touching anything in school.

Attached is a reminder 'flow chart' from Herefordshire Council.

    2. Awareness (but not a sympathy request !!)

All staff are engaged in teaching most of the time and cannot respond to parental communication as they would normally. That includes myself and my timetable for a  week is :

    Monday = Year 2 all day/Tuesday = Year 5 from 12 noon/Wednesday = Year 3 from 12 noon/Year 1 pm/Year 4 all day.

But this also includes any 'extra sessions' like Year 6 this week on Tuesday morning. Non contact times are spent making sure the school is safe, behaviour is excellent and learning is still happening properly as well as safeguarding/health and safety duties and planning for the future. We all have our own families and mental health to look after as well. The purpose of raising this is to make people aware that I (or teachers) cannot respond to e-mails/telephone calls in the normal way and it may take a bit longer !

'It is what it is' and we will do our best to make everything work smoothly and safely for all children. We do not want to use supply teachers and only have limited number of external adults in school during the week.

    3.NSPCC

Last week all of the classes experienced an age appropriate film about safety and well being. The NSPCC is an incredibly important charity and we support them every two years by raising some money. This week at forest school we will be walking our forest school loop walk a few times in exchange for a donation (you choose how much). The timetable for forest school clothes is below:

    Monday = Year 2 am/Year R pm

    Tuesday = Year 6 am/Year 5 pm

    Wednesday = Year 3 pm

    Thursday = Year 1 pm

    Friday = Year 4

    4. Attached are some photos of our amazing forest school site which every year group has, or will, experience. Year 6 went last week and did some writing in the dark after school. Year 1 will start on Thursday afternoon this week. The photos show you some ideas of using sticks to create depth and texture using sticks to represent the woodland. We are so lucky and it is a peaceful, calm and inspiring place to be, impacting positively on all of us (regardless of the weather). The site we use belongs to The Duchy Of Cornwall (Prince Charles, who has visited) and is a private site for our exclusive schoool use on a yearly agreement (we are in our 10th year now).

    5. '3 stars and a wish' reports will come out this weekend are addressed to you (children should not open them) then teachers will begin the phone calls, these will take about three weeks (we will ring and leave a message and try parents/carers 3 times before it becomes your responsibility to contact us). Each call will be a 10 minute slot.

    6. Attached is a picture of the Reception/Year 1 outdoor classroom  which now has an astro carpet flooring. Year R and  use this space separately at different times of the day with cleaning in between.

We look forward to another safe, aware and exciting week. Thank you for your support.

    Best wishes

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 12th November

    Thu 12 Nov 2020

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have had a good week. School has continued to run smoothly and safely.

    1. Thinking ahead to Christmas !

Parties - these will take place at forest school but children will not be able to bring food/drink and school will provide food/drink. More news to follow soon.

Father Christmas - each year Father Christmas visits Years R,1 and 2 as well as quick visit to other classes. Hopefully we will find a socially distanced way to make this happen in a safe manner (he might be online if he is working from home !!).

    2. Small steps picture (attached)

The attached picture tells it's own story of what we should expect from our teaching and learning at the moment.

    3. Outdoor classroom (Year R and 1) development

The attached picture shows you the new enclosed outdoor classroom for Year R and 1 (they are using it separately at the moment) with new gale breakers to keep the wind out, new fencing to make it a defined space and new flooring arrives soon. This has been a long term ambition and was built into our budget for this year.

    4. Entrance and exit - excellent this week, well done everyone with parking (that I can see), awareness and 'flow and go.'

    5. Attendance

We don't make a big 'song and dance' about attendance as sometimes you can't help it if you are ill and you can't come to school. We also have a very sensible set of parents/carers who always try to ensure their children are here (persistent attendance issues are very rare).

Interestingly holiday requests are down on our normal amount ! If, when ........ we come out the other side of this please don't all book a holiday in term time as you aren't allowed (except in exceptional circumstance and the end of Covid won't count ! I'm afraid these are government rules not ours as we will all need a good holiday when it is over !

Attendance last week was again amazing - every class was over 96% (if families are isolating then they don't count as they can't leave their home !). The national average for primary schools was 92% last week.

    Year R = 99.5%/Year 1 = 99.62%/Year 2 = 100%/Year 3 = 98.9 %/Year 4 = 97.7%/Year 5 = 97%/Year 6 = 96.4%

We only have a small number of children isolating. Well done everyone, fingers crossed it all continues !

    6. Comet's Meadow news

We have been busy behind the scenes and have secured a grant for £4000 from a local company (with the excellent help of a very kind parent) who are willing to assist us in developing our community garden. Tescos have also donated a voucher for plants (another big thank you to a parent) and we have a long list of willing volunteers. Bear with us while we construct our shopping list, work schedule and plans. A really positive community project is beginning to flourish. If you have any skills, links or time please let the office know and we will add you to the list, it is highly likely this will begin to take shape after Christmas and could move quite quickly.

    7. Children In Need - hair or hats are the order of the day for tomorrow with a donation to charity please. Children going to forest school can join in as well.

NSPCC forest school walk (for a charitable donation) is next week.

Hamper donations are also tomorrow (not money but food/drink for the PTA Christmas draw hampers) - the PTA will ensure that they are Covid secure and left, sealed well before any draw takes place.

    8. Uniform, PE kit and jewellery

Jewellery - children are only allowed small, plain, stud earrings that must be covered or removed for PE (you must provide the micro tape). No other jewellery is allowed. Children are allowed one item for remembrance such as a band or slap band (these must be managed properly).

Nail varnish/make up - is not allowed.

Uniform - we don't have many issues and people are pretty sensible. Uniform is about two simple things - belonging to a team and a sense of identity and protecting your own clothes.

PE kit - again it is simple - plain white t-shirt, hoodie or sweatshirt, plain shorts or leggings (not a combination of the two) and tracksuit bottoms. Recently we have some boys wearing skins under shorts but they must be the same colour and it is not a fashion show (we would prefer tracksuit bottoms or shorts), it should be either shorts or tracksuit bottoms (all without logos if possible or, if you cannot buy anything else, a very small discrete logo). If you are in any doubt please ask.

Forest school clothes - 'function over fashion' = warm and dry so good layers, warm socks and no hoodies (or it stops hoods from working properly in the rain).

Most of the above is being done properly by most people and if there is a slight error then we ask children to rectify it for the next time. If you aren't sure or there is a 'we are allowed to wear that' then please check with school first.

    9. '3 stars and a wish' reports and Seesaw codes will come home next week and will be followed by a phone call from the class teacher with a strict 10 minute limit (they won't just put the phone down !!). The teachers have a lot of calls to make so it will take a few weeks to get through everyone. Teachers will try people 3 times and leave messages before we expect parents/carers to contact us instead.

    10. Playtimes/lunchtimes - as the field is getting wet and muddy we have introduced a few new things to make it all work:

    - Year 4 have been putting sand down on the mud (so it now resembles a 1970s football pitch) which is working well.

    - We have developed some construction areas for each year group so they can build with sticks, pallets, wood etc.

    - We are introducing some games into zones so they have a focus - we will expect them to look after the equipment carefully as it is an investment.

    11. Values

Values are an extremely important aspect of school life (and home hopefully) and are the bedrock of everything we do. This week was 'World Kindness Week' and some of the classes were challenged by their teachers to undertake some random acts of kindness (we also see these quite a lot in various situations at school). Our values (set by Year 6 as part of their responsibilities) for November are 'sustainability and understanding.'

I hope you have a peaceful weekend.

    Kind regards

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 9th November 2020

    Mon 09 Nov 2020

    Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you for the sensible return to school last week (attendance was high again - a combination of safety, luck, awareness and where we live etc). Things within school continue to run smoothly (with a few gentle reminders about hands in mouths, spatial awareness and use of the field but nothing major). We take each day and week as it comes whilst also trying to teach and learn.

School is a safe place but please do not take that for granted.

Children are acutely aware of what is happening around them and need good routine /sleep and exercise to flourish. You may also be feeling guilty about their loss of opportunities/clubs/seeing wider family etc but please see it as an opportunity for family time, family walks, playing board games together and enjoying time together.

    1. Autumn reporting - '3 stars and a wish' - these will come out next week, after November 16th.

How it works this year = every Autumn and Spring we publish a very short report with regard to 3 excellent aspects of your child's learning and one target. We also comment on their general behaviour and learning behaviour. Normally you would receive these at a parent's evening but we will send them home in a sealed envelope with your child (as an eco school we will place a whole families in one envelope, your oldest child, along with their individual Seesaw details in case of isolating). We do not comment on data until the end of year report in July.

    2. Teacher telephone calls (10 minutes per child) - these will start after you have received your child's '3 stars and a wish'

Once the '3 stars and a wish' have been sent home with your child you will receive a phone call from the class teacher to discuss the 'report' (normally it would be face to face but that is not possible in the current climate). Teachers will be doing this when they have the opportunity during a very busy day (they have breaks of about 5 minutes and 30 minutes for lunch if they are lucky !) so the calls may be in the afternoon or after school. They will attempt to call you 3 times (and leave a message) before it becomes your responsibility to contact us.

    3. 'Catch up' and what it actually means !

When time is lost it cannot be replaced, it isn't logical ! For most children during the last lockdown they carried on working and progressing whilst others may have experienced some delays in their learning. That time has gone and there is no 'making up for it' as it is time passed. We now have to try to focus on progress from different starting points and teaching the children what they need whilst maintaining a balance of other important aspects such as PE, forest school, outdoor learning and every other subject.

In school and at home we also need to remember that we are in the middle of a global pandemic and everything changes and is not normal, this has an effect on everyone. Children are acutely aware of what is happening around them and we try to keep a level of normality and stability in school. We are all trying to make the best of very unusual circumstances.

    4. 'Flow and go' - as people cannot see others in their homes/gardens and only mix with one other person outside we need to be acutely aware of that when dropping off and picking up. We understand that people need social interaction but outside of school is not the place and we need you to 'flow and go' at both ends of the school day.

    REALLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND REQUESTS

    a. PLEASE STAND ON THE WHITE DOTS AND ENSURE THAT YOU ARE 2 METRES FROM OTHERS AT ALL TIMES.

    b. PARK SAFELY AND SENSIBLY (AWAY FROM JUNCTIONS, YELLOW ZIG ZAG LINES, DRIVEWAYS etc).

We have a couple of parents in Years 5 and 6 who have repeatedly, since September, dropped off on the yellow lines or in the road or parked in front of the pub (which is a vital passing place for traffic) and from this week we will be recording registration numbers to pass on to the Police. WE DO NOT OPERATE A DROP OFF - why not take 5 minutes to look around the village for a safe, sensible, community minded place to park.

    3. If you are a blue badge holder and use the staff car park could we ask that you do not enter or leave the car park until the queues are clear.

Over the course of this week we will monitor the distancing, spacial awareness and behaviours of parents before deciding if we need to insist on masks when picking up and dropping off. Hopefully people will be helpful and be quick, helping us to keep things as simple, safe and normal as possible.

    5. Curriculum

PE - we are still maintaining the levels of PE we have always had, approximately 2 hours per class (because we believe it is important). We also have additional time outside with forest school and outdoor learning opportunities.

Writing - you may have read in the media about a recent study that concluded that Year

7 pupils were up to 22 months behind in their writing (that is more than all of the lockdown period !). The actual task the children were asked to perform was to 'write about their dream job' but the company that carried it out set the task with no input (how many adults would complete that task to an acceptable standard and meeting all the criteria that we expect children to meet now ?). We know that many parents/carers struggled the most with writing during the period away from school as children are now expected to with a wider range of grammatical input (fronted adverbials etc).

How can we address any 'gaps' in writing ?

School will continue to teach the grammar, punctuation as well as opportunities for writing (with good input). We have highly skilled teachers who can do this.

Home = increase your opportunities for writing (lists, letters, cards, leaflets etc) with a mix of hand written and word processing. Why not get the children to write Christmas cards (we don't do school ones). Why not get the children to write to your wider family or friends (apparently a written letter or card is the most powerful from of communication !).

More to follow on Thursday. I hope everyone has a good week.

    Kind regards

    Mr Batstone

  • Headteacher update 1st November

    Tue 03 Nov 2020

    Hello everyone,

Following the announcement yesterday this update today replaces the one for tomorrow. There are some reminders and minimal changes to what we do in the weeks ahead. Whatever your personal beliefs are we have a duty of care to all children and staff and our aim is to keep everyone as safe as possible. Our systems are robust and worked so we don't need to change much and keep everyone's awareness on track, we then deal with situations as they occur or any new announcements (which I am sure will come).

I hope you all had a safe, peaceful and enjoyable half term.

    From Monday November 2nd

    - Only one parent accompanies your child to school to minimise the number of external adults around school.

    - Please 'flow and go' quickly at the beginning and end of the day. Gates open in the morning at just after 8:45am and close on the last church bell at 9am (please do not be late). At the end of the day the gates will open at 3:25pm. This all worked well last half term thanks to your common sense and co-operation. All entrances and exits are the same as before and 2m markings have been refreshed

    - Please park sensibly and we do not operate a 'drop off' system. The vast majority of parents have been really sensible with this but we need everyone to assist. There is plenty of parking a short walk from school.

    - If your child, or anyone in your household shows symptoms (high temperature, constant cough etc) then please book a test and do not come to school until you have your results and advice from the track and trace system.

    - Children will still go to forest school (Year 2 is all day on Monday November 2nd, packed lunch is needed) but won't be going anywhere else until next term).

    - Lunches will continue as before half term.

    - No clubs will operate this term (Irish dancing will send separate information).

    - Some staff may wear face masks/shields or other PPE as they can wear anything they need to feel safe or to protect their family (some staff live with very vulnerable adults).

    - Attendance - before half term this was amazing (bit of luck, awareness and the area we live in). Please contact the school if you have any worries or concerns about your own family (01981 250241 or admin@madley.hereford.sch.uk). Each situation is looked at individually.

    - Breakfast club and Madley After School Club will still operate but will be reviewed as required (as this is one place where children from different year groups mix). If you are furloughed from Thursday and no longer require MASC or breakfast club for the month please contact Pre School (breakfast club) or school (MASC) and we will apply common sense and flexibility for the period of lockdown.

Parents/carers may also need to think about (not our place to tell you what to do with these) -

    - Lift sharing with other families.

I am sure more information will come out this week but we have robust systems in place and it all worked before half term. With your co-operation and common sense it should all work again. Updates will be sent every Monday and Thursday unless there is an emergency one.

    Regards

    Mr Batstone
